Kindergarten
project outline
This project’s goal was to remodel an industrial shed used by the LAPD Mounted Unit and make in into a kindergarten. The stark contrast of the programs was the challenge of the project. In order to achieve this the formal transformation of the building aimed to create variety in section, thus creating pocket programs and level difference. The overall idea was to introduce a “play” area that the kindergarten program sits in. Thus the single level warehouse was dissected and deconstructed.
2 sub-projects were designed in this process. One being a single kindergarten classroom that incorporated an underground rubber cladded pocket referred to as the “cave”. The second project brings the methodology and program of the classroom to design a complete kindergarten school with multiple classrooms, dining and executive programs. The middle section is dedicated for play and accomplishes a dynamic and stimulating terrain for children.
